A palace for beautiful voices
The world-famous Vienna Boys’ Choir has a long tradition dating back to the 15th century when the emperor Maximilian I ordered that six boys also be among the court musicians moving with him from Innsbruck to Vienna. Today there are approximately 100 active choirboys in four choirs of equal importance which share challenging tasks. Since 1948, the Augarten Palace in Vienna has served as the rehearsal venue and boarding school for the Vienna Boys’ choir.
Making music, living and learning together
The palace itself contains a music wing with rehearsal rooms, artistic administration office, a grammar school and official event rooms. The boarding school affiliated to the Vienna Boys’ Choir is situated in an annexe which was built in 1969 and is linked to the palace via a glass bridge.
A home for extremely talented singers
The Vienna Boys’ Choir is a private, non-profit-making organisation which aims to offer musically gifted children the best possible education available. The pupils learn to perform music at the highest level and develop and exploit their full musical potential. The education is available to all boys with the necessary talent, irrespective of family background or religion.
Curriculum to the rhythm of music
Despite the grammar school timetable, the choirboys make a lot of music: Mondays to Saturdays at least two hours of daily choir rehearsals, plus voice training, solo rehearsals and instrument lessons. In addition, there are concert tours which take up approximately eleven weeks of the school year.
Dishwashing convenience
Making music, learning and playing is hungry work. Therefore it comes as no surprise that the boarding school’s large dining hall is used several times a day for meals and snacks. The result is a lot of soiled crockery left behind by around two hundred hungry mouths. For some time now, Miele’s G 8072 commercial dishwasher has been responsible for dealing with this mountain of crockery in the boarding school’s kitchen, performing reliably - just like the young choirboys.
