A competence centre for human medicine

The Academisch Medisch Centrum (AMC, Academic Medical Centre) is the most renowned medical science institute in the Netherlands and one of the largest clinics in the country. Here under one roof the University of Amsterdam medical faculty and clinic work together with the Dutch Institute for Neuroscience and the medical department of the Royal Tropical Institute.

A forum for both science and art

As well as its high-level scientific achievements, the AMC also offers some surprises of a more aesthetic nature. The centre is home to the largest permanent exhibition of Dutch art from the period since 1945. In addition to around 5000 paintings, drawings and photographs, the collection includes a large number of monumental works.

At the service of the patient and science

The AMC originally developed from a merger of two centuries-old university clinics, the Binnengasthuis and the Wilhelmina Gasthuis, with the medical faculty of the University of Amsterdam. Following the building of the new AMC complex in 1984, all the faculty laboratories and institutes could all be brought together under one roof. Four years later the AMC was further complemented when an exemplary university children’s clinic also joined the centre.

Perfect service for uncompromising hygiene

A competence centre for human medicine demands the highest possible standards when it comes to the subject of instrument hygiene. Therefore, in the AMC Amsterdam the Dutch-British company Synergy Healthcare B.V. is responsible for the disinfection of surgical instruments. In the United Kingdom Synergy Healthcare PLC is the largest provider of external disinfection services for the reprocessing of medical instruments.

First-class disinfection performance

The surgical department of the AMC is in service for 15 hours a day and has an annual throughput of around 2.5 million instruments. The reprocessing of these instruments is a major part of the Quality Management System with regard to patient safety and protection against infection. As reliable disinfection is the most difficult step in the reprocessing cycle, Synergy has installed six Miele PG 8528 washer-disinfectors in the AMC to ensure the highest possible standards are achieved.
